Your gift should equal the cost of the amount of guests you bring to the wedding. If it is 2 people for a dinner, then figure $100, unless you normally eat at McDonalds

If there is a registry for the wedding, should you always pick something off of that list or can you get something else that is more personal?

I would say that the registry is the couple trying to avoid getting too many gifts that they just won't be able to use. But if you know the couple well and you want to do something more personal I don't see any harm in that, they might really appreciate the thought. At my sister's wedding one person made a pretty framed copy of her wedding invitation which she really liked

If you just eat normally at McDonalds then you might figure it out. Alternatively, you should try to have a dinner on some restaurant to know the cost of regular dinner. And you might figure out an equal amount for your gift.
